crazy gasoline

Delta Air doubles fee for second checked bag to $50

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines on Tuesday doubled the fee to check a second bag for domestic flights to $50 from $25 to help offset record fuel prices.

Delta announced a number of baggage fee increases on domestic and international flights, including a rise in the fee for items that require special handling such as surfboards or ski equipment.

Delta also increased the fee for a third checked bag from $80 to $125 on domestic flights and from $150 to $200 on international flights. It also raised fees for bags that exceed its weight allowance.

These changes will apply to tickets bought on or after July 31 for travel on or after August 5.

"As fuel costs remain at record levels, Delta believes revising the fee structure for excess bags and specialty items is essential to generate the necessary revenues to offset record fuel costs while continuing to offer these services to customers," the airline said in a statement.

Amid record fuel prices and a slowing U.S. economy, airlines are cutting routes, capacity and jobs and raising fares and fees to survive.

Delta said its First Class, Business Elite and Medallion customers will still be able to check up to three bags at no charge and customers on international flights can check a first and second bag at no charge.

Delta said all of its customers can still check a first bag free of charge on domestic flights and check two bags free of charge on international flights.

Ballade of Baby Doe

Willow Song, Beverly Sills as Baby Doe

Silver aria.

Silver Aria
Barbara Iona Miller, soprano

Ballade of Baby Doe 是美國作曲家Douglas Moore 在1956年的作品, (Libretto by John Latouche).

Tabor's House

Tabor Opera House
"So fleet the works of man:
back to the earth again
Ancient and holy things
Fade like a dream....."
-- Charles Kingsley
(inscription on the curtain of the Tabor Grand Opera House)

Sets: Donald Oenslager
Director: Hanya Holm
Conductor: Emerson Buckley
Tabor: Walter Vassel(baritone)
Augusta: Martha Lipton (mezzo)
Baby Doe: Dolores Wilson (soprano)
[The alternated cast included Clifford Harvuot, Frances Bible and Leyna Gabriele]

Beverly Sills, Central city, New York, 1958.
一唱完Willow Song, Moore 走上舞台說: "Miss Sills, you are Baby Doe."

one of the great contemporary American opera, 至少我可以跟我的singer 說: well, let's sing it together!

R. Strauss -- Morgan

Morgan.op.27, no.4

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, R.Strauss - Morgen

Dame Janet Baker - Strauss' Morgen

Morgen

[ text in German by John Henry Mackay (1864-1933)]

Tomorrow
And tomorrow the sun will shine again,
and on the path I will take,
it will unite us again, we happy ones,
upon this sun-breathing earth...

And to the shore, the wide shore with blue waves,
we will descend quietly and slowly;
we will look mutely into each other's eyes
and the silence of happiness will settle upon us.

R. Strauss -- Wasserrose

Wasserrose,from Mädchenblumen, op.22 no.4

Wasserrose

Kennst du die Blume, die märchenhafte,
sagengefeierte Wasserrose?
wenn sie schweigt, ist's die ahnende Stille der Mondnacht;
deren Sprache die gleiche Natur sie gewohnt macht;
[ text in German by Felix Ludwig Julius Dahn (1834-1912)]

Waterlily
Do you know the flower, the fantastic
waterlily, celebrated in myth?
On a slim, ethereal stem bobs
its translucent, colorless head;
it blooms by reedy pools in groves,
protected by the swan, who circles it in solitary vigil;
it opens only in the moonlight
with which it shares its silver glimmer:
thus does it bloom, the magical sister of the star,
idolized for its dreamy, dark tendrils
which by the edge of the pool can be seen from afar,
never reaching what it years for.
Waterlily, so do I call the slim
maiden with night-dark locks and alabaster cheeks,
with deep foreboding thoughts showing in her eyes
as if they were ghosts imprisoned on Earth.
When she speaks, it is like the silvery rushing of water;
when she is silent, it is the pregnant silence of the moonlit night.
She seems to have exchanged radiant expressions with the stars,
whose language, of the same nature, she has grown accustomed to.
You can never grow weary of gazing in those eyes
fringed with silky, long lashes,
and you believe, as if blessedly, terrifyingly bewitched,
whatever the Romatics have dreamed about Elves.

This fourth and last of the Mädchenblumen introduces the watwe lily, who blooms only in the moonlight, is guarded by a solitary swan, and whom the dark moth longs for from the edge of the pound. This slender maid -- with dark hair and alabaster cheeks -- has eyes edged with long lashes but filled with deep, foreboding thoughts. Her actions and words seems to reflect the waves, moonlight, and stars of the reedy ponds, and in her spellbinding gaze you find truth in the Romantic notion of faireies.

North American Birdsong in Bartok's piano concerto no.3 by Maria Anna Harley

Elephants Dream

Elephants Dream from Blender Foundation on Vimeo.

The story of two strange characters exploring a capricious and seemingly infinite machine. The elder, Proog, acts as a tour-guide and protector, happily showing off the sights and dangers of the machine to his initially curious but increasingly skeptical protege Emo. As their journey unfolds we discover signs that the machine is not all Proog thinks it is, and his guiding takes on a more desperate aspect.

Elephants Dream is a story about communication and fiction, made purposefully open-ended as the world's first 3D "Open movie". The film itself is released under the Creative Commons license, along with the entirety of the production files used to make it (roughly 7 Gigabytes of data). The software used to make the movie is the free/open source animation suite blender along with other open source software, thus allowing the movie to be remade, remixed and re-purposed with only a computer and the data on the DVD or download.

Igor Stravinsky plays Stravinsky Piano Sonata (1924)

Stravinsky piano sonata (1924),
因為聽的出來action 和pedal 的時間差; 觸鍵也很不一樣 . live recording & paper-roll 總是有差距的啊.... 不過上傳的人先放了mvt. II, Adagietto --> mvt. I, quarter note = 112 (4:38) --> mvt. III, quarter note = 112 (7:50)

Barber -- Dover Beach

The sea is calm tonight,
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straights; on the French coast the light
Gleams, and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimm'ring and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, Sweet is the night air!
Only from the long line of spray,
Where the sea meets the moon-blanch'd land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin and cease and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.

Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the Aegean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.

The sea of faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now I only hear,
Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating to the breath
Of the night wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world

Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here, as on a darkling plain,
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.

poem by Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), published: 1867
Music by Samuel Barber (1910-1981), op.3, for mezzo/Baritone, & String quartet.
composed: 1931; published: 1936

"Perhaps it is music that will save the world."
- Pablo Casals

Surgery Forces James Levine to Bow Out of Tanglewood

By DANIEL J. WAKIN
Published: July 9, 2008

The conductor James Levine will have a kidney removed because of the discovery of a cyst, forcing him to miss the rest of the Tanglewood Festival season, the Boston Symphony Orchestra said on Tuesday.

Mr. Levine, the music director of the Boston Symphony and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, is expected to recover fully and be ready for the opening of the opera and symphony seasons in September, according to a statement.

The one-page announcement provided few medical details, other than saying that the cyst had caused “pressure and discomfort.” Doctors called the surgery “curative, with no other treatment necessary,” it said.

The operation is the latest medical setback for Mr. Levine, 65, a major maestro who has been carefully husbanding his energy in recent years. He suffers from intermittent hand tremors and sciatica, and has struggled with his weight.

In 2006 he was out for four months because of a shoulder injury caused by a fall and underwent rotator-cuff surgery. Last summer he canceled a conducting trip to the Verbier Festival in Switzerland to conserve strength. After each setback, Mr. Levine has returned with vigor.

Last weekend Mr. Levine was on the podium to open the Boston Symphony’s summer season at the Tanglewood Festival in Lenox, Mass., with a concert version of Berlioz’s huge opera “Les Troyens,” performed over two days. It is a piece to tax the spryest of conductors, and Mr. Levine is said to have appeared to be in good physical condition.

He had planned to lead nine more concerts, with the Boston Symphony and the Tanglewood Music Center student orchestra. The concerts included performances of Kurt Weill’s “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” and Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin.” He also would have conducted several programs of music by Elliott Carter, in celebration of that composer’s 100th birthday.

The Boston Symphony said that guest conductors would replace Mr. Levine. Julian Kuerti, a Boston Symphony assistant conductor and former Tanglewood Music Center fellow, will lead the orchestra this Sunday.

In the statement, Mr. Levine said: “It is extremely frustrating that I need to have this surgery now. My projects at Tanglewood have been planned so carefully and coordinated in such detail by the festival administration.” He said that he especially regretted missing the concerts in honor of Mr. Carter, whose music Mr. Levine had been championing.

Mr. Levine did not immediately respond to messages left with Tanglewood staff.

The statement also did not say when the cyst was discovered or when the decision was made to operate. Mark Volpe, the Boston Symphony’s president, said Mr. Levine had told him and Tanglewood officials about the surgery on Sunday at a cast party after “Les Troyens.” Mr. Levine arrived at Tanglewood on June 26 and had also been working with conducting fellows and the Tanglewood Music Center orchestra.

“Our first reaction was for his own well-being,” Mr. Volpe said. He said he had no more information than what was in the statement.

The Boston Symphony players learned about the situation at rehearsal on Tuesday. “It’s kind of a disconnect for them,” Mr. Volpe said, “because he’s in such great shape.”

future

除了應該要知道的"基本知識"外, what makes you different from others? [Theory, dictation, class keyboard, violin, with music appreciation, introduction of research, organ, brass band, and secondary voice.]

(Doctoral of Musical Arts) Just get it done!

Theory
1.organization of rhythm
2.how a pre-existing melody is used: the dev. of cantus firmus
3.form by texture: writings until the mature motet
4.dev. of cadential patterns
5.imtation:how voices are used with similarity

movies

The Lake House

Sex and the city
I'm the girl who watch CSI & House MD all the time. Be strong, be happy.

Iron Man

Kungfu Panda
