鏘鏘鏘, 趕在最後一刻考完online final.
紀念一下這學期不知道在唸啥, 三學分但是 hdouble loading 的 Music & Medicine. 老師非常有雄心壯志的叫我們參與大學部的課, 結果就是graduate:<\____/@ 給我交出paper critics!+ 大學部的小考, survey, midterm & Final 都要考! 真是自找苦吃. 而且不是馬的一個字可以形容.

不過我們這票人(graduate Students)也很妙, 因為大家都爆忙, 其中三個是TF, 剩下的DMA & MM 學生也很忙, 自動忽視每週小考, 改成只考期末期中而已. 每次seminar不知怎地, 總會牽拖到 Live is pretty messy.... 我還在猶豫. 能像她們一樣, 一頭栽進完全不懂得統計學和醫學嗎? Even 老師不斷說, "I rarely got so many briany perple.... I want you all can stay!" (一片裝死.....) 現在就看下學期五個人中剩幾個留下來啦!

Vocal Fold Nodules and Polyps
What are vocal fold nodules and polyps?

Vocal fold nodules are benign growths on both vocal folds that are caused by vocal abuse. Over time, repeated misuse of the vocal folds results in soft, swollen spots on each vocal fold that develop into harder, callus-like growths. The nodules will become larger and more stiff the longer the vocal abuse continues.

Polyps , on the other hand, can take a number of forms and are sometimes caused by vocal abuse. Polyps appear on either one or both of the vocal folds and appear as a swelling or bump (like a nodule), a stalk-like growth, or a blister-like lesion. Most polyps are larger than nodules and may be called by other names, such as polypoid degeneration or Reinke's edema.

What will my voice sound like if I have nodules or polyps?

Nodules and polyps cause similar symptoms and include:

Hoarseness
Breathiness
A "rough" voice
A "scratchy" voice
Harshness
Shooting pain from ear to ear
A "lump in the throat" sensation
Neck pain
Decreased pitch range
Voice and body fatigue
What causes nodules and polyps?

Nodules are most frequently caused by vocal abuse or misuse. Polyps may be caused by prolonged vocal abuse, but may also occur after a single, traumatic event to the vocal folds, such as yelling at a concert. Long-term cigarette smoking, hypothyroidism, and gastroesophageal reflux may also cause polyp formation. Vocal abuse takes many forms and includes:

Allergies
Smoking
"Type A" personality (person who is often tense or anxious)
Singing
Coaching
Cheerleading
Talking loudly
Drinking caffeine and alcohol (dries out the throat and vocal folds)
It has been noted that, for unknown reasons, vocal nodules occur more frequently in women between the ages of 20 and 50.

How are nodules and polyps diagnosed?

If you have experienced a hoarse voice for more than 2 to 3 weeks, you should see a physician. A thorough voice evaluation should include a physician's examination, preferably by an otolaryngologist, who specializes in voice, a voice evaluation by a speech-language pathologist, and possibly a neurological examination. The voice team will assess vocal quality, pitch, loudness, ability to sustain voicing, and other characteristics of the voice. An instrumental examination may take place, which involves inserting an endoscope into the mouth or nose to look at the vocal folds and larynx in general. A stroboscope (flashing light) may be used to watch the vocal folds as they move.

What can be done to get rid of nodules and polyps?

Nodules and polyps may be treated medically, surgically, and/or behaviorally. Surgical intervention involves removing the nodule or polyp from the vocal fold. This approach only occurs when the nodules or polyps are very large or have existed for a long time and is rare for children. Contributing medical problems may be treated to reduce their impact on the vocal folds. This includes treatment for gastroesophageal reflux, allergies and thyroid problems. Medical intervention to stop smoking or to control stress is sometimes warranted.

A majority of people receive behavioral intervention, or voice therapy, from a speech-language pathologist. Voice therapy involves teaching good vocal hygiene, eliminating vocal abuses, and direct voice treatment to alter pitch, loudness, or breath support for good voicing. Stress reduction techniques and relaxation exercises are often taught, as well.

(中央社記者林琳紐約八日專電)紐約大都會歌劇院將於十二月二十一日首演由譚盾作曲並指揮的歌劇創作「秦始皇」。譚盾表示,他一直希望創作一齣歌劇,由男高音多明哥擔綱演唱,終於如願以償。

多明哥領銜演出的「秦始皇」,是譚盾接受大都會歌劇委託創作的「新歌劇」。兩幕五景的歌劇是西方歌劇戲劇性的形式及演唱,音樂方面也注入了曲調簡樸的先秦古樂的鐘磬打擊。譚盾在大都會歌劇院舉行的記者會中表示,他融合東西音樂的創作,也試圖兼具「陽春白雪及下里巴人」不同的境界與喜好,以新的歌劇形式挑戰觀眾。

由大陸旅美作家哈金與譚盾聯合編寫的劇本,是以一九九六年出品、由中國大陸周曉文導演的影片「秦頌」的故事為大綱,敘述秦始皇在統一天下之後希望能統一人心,迫使高漸離為他譜寫「秦頌」。君王、音樂家、公主和大將軍之間的恩怨情仇,讓史書裡的暴君稍微「人性化」。多明哥談他的「始皇帝」角色就表示,因為是歌劇,執著於「統一的音樂」的皇帝比較「人性化」。

這齣歌劇共有始皇帝、高漸離、櫟陽公主、王賁將軍、廷吏、櫟陽之母、陰陽師及女巫八個角色,其中僅吳興國扮演的陰陽師的吟唱是中文,其他都是以英語演唱。由陰陽師的唸白帶出故事,有中國說書的味道,也有古希臘劇場中評述者的特質。

譚盾請吳興國擔任這個角色,應該不只是他平劇的底子,更是借重他多年創作並演出現代劇場的經驗。劇中人物舉手投足之間可看到一些平劇身段。吳興國指出,傳統平劇身段很容易讓觀眾會意到角色的性格,導演張藝謀就會要求演員在這方面加以琢磨。

十二月二十一日到明年元月二十五日,「秦始皇」將在大都會歌劇院演出九場。八日中午演員們首! 度著��服,配合譚盾指揮樂團排演。從十一月間就開始在歌劇院密集排練的演員和樂團,其實在每天的排練中都不斷的琢磨修改。

譚盾表示,「秦始皇」是他專門為多明哥寫的歌劇。在美國及歐洲有無數歌劇演出及樂團指揮工作的多明哥,在百忙之中仍樂於為譚盾的作品首演。他表示,和紐約的大都會歌劇院已有三十九年的淵源,卻是第一次在此為新的歌劇首演。對於譚盾創作,他相當推崇,不過,他在排練的過程中也會對於音樂部份提出意見。

除了擔綱的主要演員及編劇哈金,「秦始皇」的導演張藝謀、副導演王潮歌、舞台設計樊躍及編舞與獨舞黃豆豆,都是中國大陸的藝術家。譚盾、多明哥與張藝謀合作的歌劇,在紐約必然有賣點。在一系列座談會、記者會及主流表演藝術媒體的報導下,「秦始皇」已未演先轟動,大都會歌劇院認為這是華裔美國人製作的美國新歌劇,華人卻可能有不同的看法。951208

surf in sonw --- Yes, You Can Surf in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Dec. 9 — They surf in Cleveland because they must. They surf with two-inch icicles clinging to their wet suits, through stinging hail and overpowering wind. They work nights to spend their winter days scouting surf. They are watermen on an inland sea.

Given its industrial past, Cleveland largely turns its back to Lake Erie, lining the coast with power plants, a freeway and mounds of iron ore to feed its steel factories. The shore is especially deserted in winter, when strong winds and waves pummel the land. In December, as temperatures dip into the 20s and ice gathers in the lake’s small coves, Cleveland surfers have Lake Erie almost entirely to themselves.

“Surfing Lake Erie is basically disgusting,” said Bill Weeber, known as Mongo, 44. “But then I catch that wave and I forget about it, and I feel high all day.”

Scott Ditzenberger hoped to experience the same feeling when he heard that the first blizzard of the winter was pounding across the Midwest.

“I was so excited I could barely sleep last night,” said Mr. Ditzenberger, 35, who quit his job as a lawyer in August to spend more time surfing and to film a documentary about Cleveland’s surf community.

It was the kind of day that lives mostly in Cleveland surfers’ fantasies. Pushed by the storm’s winds, water the color of chocolate milk rose 10 feet in the air before slamming onto a beach of boulders and logs. The temperature was 40 degrees and falling. One surfer, Vince Labbe, climbed onto his board only to get blown backward by 40-mile-an-hour winds.

Mike Miller, known as Chewbacca, managed to tuck his head and left shoulder into the barrel of a wave before being crushed by a wall of water.

“I haven’t seen a break this good in 10 years,” Mr. Ditzenberger said.

Go ahead and laugh. Cleveland surfers are used to it.

When Jamie Yanak sits at a stoplight with his surfboard atop his 1996 Ford Thunderbird, he said, people point and laugh. Every year a local television crew arrives on the beach to film surfers in the snow and make jokes about “California dreaming.”

But this is not California. And Cleveland surfers are not playing around. Many of the roughly 25 committed surfers here work nights all year to keep their winter days free for surfing. Mr. Weeber quit his job as an advertising art director and makes less money as a summer landscaper. He moved his family closer to the beach, to spend more time on the waves.

Sean Rooney, 31, said, “All I want to do is surf.”

The strongest winds and waves come in winter, just before Lake Erie freezes. Waves up to 10 feet have been surfed, but the largest swells are usually chest-high. Instead of curling into a vertical wall, the waves are round like haystacks, and they collapse onto the shore like soggy paper.

Surfers learn to avoid ice chunks the size of bowling balls. Some wear goggles to surf through freezing rain, which can sting their eyes like needles. That is a bad idea, Mr. Labbe said, because the goggles freeze to their faces.

Surfers watch their friends for signs of hypothermia, urging them to leave the water when their eyes glaze over and their words slur. Ear infections are a common affliction.

To reach the lake, surfers drag their boards across snowdrifts and beaches littered with used condoms and syringes, Mr. Ditzenberger said. The most popular surf spot is Edgewater State Park. It is nicknamed Sewer Pipe because, after heavy rains, a nearby water treatment plant regularly discharges untreated waste into Lake Erie.

Love and family obligations prevent most surfers here from moving to California or Hawaii. So they adapt. Mr. Rooney chose a surfboard that is longer and wider than most modern boards because it adds buoyancy in the lake’s salt-free water. He replaced its three small fins with one large fin, which helps him turn quickly on small waves.

Because the nearest surf shop is on Lake Michigan, 285 miles away, Mr. Labbe builds surfboards for his friends in his mother’s basement.

“Cleveland surfers have a reputation for being gritty and hard-core,” said Ryan Gerard, owner of Third Coast Surf Shop in New Buffalo, Mich. “They just don’t care what other people think about them.”

Except that they hate being compared with the modern California surf scene. Cleveland surfers believe they are the last remnants of the original surf culture in the 1940s and ’50s, when surfing was still a renegade sport of social misfits who scouted virgin breaks, surfed alone and lived by a code of friendliness to newcomers and respect for the water. They keep their best surf spots secret. They consider themselves part of an underground society. And they hope to keep it that way.

“Everybody surfs in California, which waters down the experience,” said Mr. Rooney, who grew up surfing in Orange County, Calif., before moving to Cleveland three years ago to work in his family’s real estate business. “Being here takes me back to that feeling of discovery that the founding fathers of surfing experienced.”

Occasionally there are days when the waves are good and the sunset falls into Lake Erie like a red fire and the Cleveland surfers bob silently in the water, alone in the city. And they laugh at their good fortune.

“Nobody surfs here to get noticed,” Mr. Ditzenberger said. “We surf here because we love it.”

Group piano

一轉眼, 又到了期末了. 學校開始dead week, 圖書館也總是人潮洶湧.想到老姐說的, 哎呀呀, 這下換妳進入女生最精華的年紀啦~~嗚拉拉, 話說最美妙的時間總是在圖書館度過.我的青春啊啊啊啊......(笑)

其實經過這一學期兵慌馬亂的生活, 步調是調整過來了, 可是壓力也沒減輕多少. 這學期帶大學部的鋼琴課, 早上一班, 下午一班, 總是有幾個寶貝蛋令人擔心.

上午那班算是中等程度, 有兩隻小孩一直彈的不錯, 其他中等,程度不一的左右手不協調,然後是幾隻手指總是像麵條, 常缺席, 找藉口不練琴再來哀說他做不到.很好玩的是, 我的確看到她們有進步了. 常常會上課講, 不知道有沒有聽進去, 然後小考再自己臨場即興.問問題不回答, 多講解也不知道該用火星文還是用中文才會聽進去. 像我們有當過老師的, 就知道教課的困難. 算是同理心吧! 我門多少能體會老師的辛苦. 這些小鬼,等以後妳們當助教就知道啦~~~~ 反正老師在講你不聽, 不聽齁,考試再來跟我哀說不知道, 老師在講你有沒有在聽啊! (丟筆~~~~)看到這樣, 一律鐵面有私的說不給補考, 不然給我醫生證明, 生病一學期不看醫生也是有鬼.(對, 一來是rule, 其實也是我懶)

到了學期末, 大家都知道遊戲規則, 這樣的情況就少了一點, 應該是說, 我比較能坦然面對了.沒來上課不是我能左右的, 所以只好把你當掉囉.....嘿嘿.

下午那班學生整個是令我大心. 果真大家都愛教程度好的小孩.很妙的是, 不知怎地, 就只有六個學生而已. 相較起其他十幾二十人的課, 老實說, 真是太讚了.翹課和輪流不來, 每次大概二到四隻小朋友而已. (笑) 大班課當家教課上了.

偶爾接到學生的email, 不外乎是請假或是問考試內容, 看到title 寫Dr.---, 整個就是想笑. 我音樂會還沒開完,還沒寫論文哪~~~~ 下學期也是接到兩班, 一堂level 1一堂level 2, 可能就沒像這學期這麼好命啦!!但是遇到學生說, 下學期還想跟我上, 聽的我好有成就感. 而且輾轉知道Dr. Kern 期末教學評鑑分數給的不錯, 給自己拍拍手!!

明天給她們考完試, 要來算成績啦! Fall semester, Done!(然後我就可以埋在我的書堆中專心唸書了.XD)

■三少四壯集---無器官身體

如果從芭蕾舞到現代舞是一個把身體重新找回來的過程,那從現代舞到後現代舞或許就是一個重新把身體丟掉的過程,前者難,後者難上加難。

什麼是身體?芭蕾的身體沒有舞者的喜怒哀樂,只有動作的精敏完美,所有的旋轉與騰越,輕盈無重力。現代舞的身體有血有肉,與地心引力纏綿,欲拒還迎,承載著敘事與情感的動量。現代舞的出現,讓芭蕾的動作顯得冰冷機械無人性,讓框架芭蕾動作的童話故事變得異常幼稚而可笑。但當現代舞的收縮延伸、騰起坍塌,已然成為套式而失去創新動作語彙時,我們就有了一個無法定義卻又似乎無所不包的詞語:後現代舞蹈。而今年秋天的台北就有兩場精彩的後現代舞蹈,一個是現代之「後」,將現代推到了極致,一個是回到現代之「前」的芭蕾,徹底與現代斷裂。

德國莎夏.瓦茲舞團的「肉體」以十三名高矮胖瘦膚色不一的舞者,探索身體的奧祕。「肉體」的「後」現代,在於開展舞蹈的跨領域與多媒體呈現,身體與建築,動作與裝置,舞者與表演。「肉體」的「後」現代,在於「作者已死」,以舞者彼此之間的「接觸即興」,作為集體身體動作的發展。但「肉體」還是非常非常的現代,有以超現實夢境鋪展出的活人畫,有對猶太歷史浩劫的陰霾記憶,有對當代醫學科技與基因控制的反思。這裡的身體有身高體重,這裡的身體會生老病死,這裡的身體不論美麗與醜陋都可待價而沽。兩名裸體的女舞者,在彼此的身體上畫出器官位置並標上價碼,腎一對多少錢,肝一付多少錢,隆乳的價碼與隆鼻的費用。

如果「肉體」是個以器官、以個別單一舞者為組合單元的「有機體」與「生物體」想像,那德國編舞家威廉.佛塞領軍巴伐利亞國家芭蕾舞團演出的「身體協奏曲」,就是一個打破個別身體生理結構、邊界劃分與人本中心的「非人」與「非身體」想像。三十八位舞者出現消失,多點散佈在舞台的四面八方,一切都在進行,無始無終。這個驚人的舞作,沒有整體劃一的集體動作,沒有正面景觀的定點展現,舞者甚至在陰暗的角落跳著幾乎看不見的舞步,但整個舞台是一股龐大奔騰的動量,不斷分裂組構,打破所有單一觀點的視覺掌控。這個舞作不抒情不表意,這個舞作是純粹的節奏,空間加上時間加上動量。

威廉.佛塞的舞台也用了大型裝置,像持續轉動的風帆,像巨大的波浪牆。但這裡的動力機械雕塑在於改變光影,在於創造身體與裝置的無盡空間連結。這裡風帆就只是風帆,牆就只是牆,不像「肉體」中那面十公尺高的三角牆,影射挪移的乃是柏林猶太博物館的浩劫記憶。那是一面「歷史」的黑牆,「創傷」的黑牆。而一面擁擠著文化表意的牆,不會也不能只是一面牆,就像被打上數字的裸體,不會也不能只是一個裸體。

「肉體」與「身體協奏曲」是截然不同的身體與舞台,前者是我們已然相當熟悉的舞蹈劇場力作,後者卻讓我們大開眼界,這是名為現代芭蕾、卻比後現代還要後現代的新世紀「舞蹈機器」。「舞蹈機器」是「機器」不是「機械」,「機器」是無盡的生成組構,「機械」是單調封閉的重複。「舞蹈機器」不是「舞蹈劇場」。「舞蹈機器」有如「戰爭機器」、「慾望機器」,沒有敘事,只有蓄勢,沒有情感,只有力動。

這或許就是威廉.佛塞將舞作命名為「肢幹定理」而非台灣誤譯的「身體協奏曲」之原因吧。為何不是「身體」而是「肢幹」?為何不是「協奏曲」而是「定理」?威廉.佛塞的「舞蹈機器」不是現代與芭蕾的結合,而是芭蕾的解構、現代的反轉,在「現代」與「芭蕾」的矛盾語中,顛擾出最徹底最抽象最數學定理的身體解構。「舞蹈機器」中每一個舞者都大於一,每-個舞者也都小於一,個別單一舞者「身體」已消失,卻開放出無盡組構幻化的無人稱「肢幹」。

這裡沒有等於一的「身體」,這裡只有比一大也比一小的「肢幹」。這裡沒有內在性的情感,這裡只有將內在性翻轉為實存平面的流變動量。身體不見了,於是,身體無所不在。
